Courses starting every Monday and Thursday
Students often find solving word problems difficult, but it is important to be able to solve these problems set in real-world contexts. The course takes students through a three-step process of tackling word problems, Comprehending - Modelling - Solving.
Students will apply this process to a wide variety of scenarios involving multiplication. They will also have a lot of fun, trying to create word problems of their own. By the end of the course, students will have a newfound confidence in solving word problems and they will take back a process they can fall back on!
This is the first class in the course of Multiplication Word Problems and it takes students from additive to multiplicative thinking. The class emphasizes on processing the information in increments, which helps them draw a model and plan the arithmetic.
After modeling word problems through realistic and representational drawings in the first class, students work with scenarios that are based on models of equal groups. In this class, students identify and make use of keywords such as "groups of", "in each
In this class, students utilize the understanding of rows, columns and their sizes to model multiplication word problems using arrays. Students use repeated addition and skip counting as calculation procedures to calculate the final answer.
The last class of the course is about moving from concrete models to abstract respresentations. In this class, students work with multiplication word problems of different structures and come up with their own strategies to plan the arithmetic and get to
