About the course

We all intuitively know that a football field is bigger than our backyard. But how do we measure how big the football field is?

The course covers a deep-dive into the concept of area and its measurement. We will start with activities that foster conceptual understanding. Once students understand that the area of a shape is the space covered by it, they will start measuring area in non-standard units using everyday objects.

They will then move on to measuring area with the use of unit squares, first by counting all squares that cover up a shape, then by skip counting, then finally using multiplication.

Students will also explore the idea of area being additive through partitioning and composition of shapes.

Lessons in the Course

  • 1

    Understand the meaning of area

    • In the lesson, students will understand the meaning of Area as the "space covered by a shape". They will reason and argue which shape has a bigger area by visual comparison, overlapping and using different objects as informal tools for measurement.

  • 2

    Measure Area using Unit squares

    • This lesson take students one step forward towards formal measurement of area. Students will learn to measure area as the number of unit squares that cover a shape.

  • 3

    Relate area and multiplication

    • This lesson is all about relating the measurement of area with multiplication of side lengths. Advance from skip-counting and repeated addition to finding the number of unit squares that can cover a rectangular shape.

  • 4

Properties of Multiplication using Area Models

    • This lesson is about connecting area and multiplication. Students will be able to visualize distributive and commutative property of multiplication by visualizing them using area of shapes (area model)

  • 5

    Understand Area is Additive

    • The big idea in this lesson is that area is additive. Students will calculate area of rectilinear shapes by adding the areas of rectangular regions that make up those shapes.

  • 6

    Solve Word Problems on Area

    • Connecting the understanding of area to real world applications. Students will solve a variety of mathematically rich word problems involving measurement of Area. They will be taken through a three-step process of solving word problems.

Parents love our courses

Passed this along to several friends

Father of a fourth grader

My son really enjoyed it and he usually hates math. Ted, the instructor was great. My son is looking forward to their next session on Friday and we signed him up for a session on Fractions as well. I've also passed this along to several friends who are interested. Much appreciated especially now. This is a great resource/service.

Teacher helps her understand concepts

Mother of a third grader

Thank you for emailing. So far, it has worked out well for us and our daughter. She says she really likes her teacher, despite the concepts being brand new to her. She feels challenged by some of the work, but I think that is the point and the teacher helps her understand the concepts.

Super patient teachers

Mother of a second grader

Kendra was wonderful. She was super patient with my son and he just took his milestone test on fractions at school and said "it was SO easy!" Kendra really helped get him up-to-speed on fractions.

Helping my son stay focused

Mother of a 3rd Grader

Thank you so much. My son has ADHD so keeping focus can be challenging for him. We really appreciate your support. I feel like he is really making strides.

Difficulty level was spot on

Parent of a 5th Grader

My daughter enjoyed the class. The level of difficulty was spot on. No complaints!

Meet the Teachers

Tamara Thovtrup

Originally from California, and after a few moves around the country, I am now living just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. I am a mom of two children and the wife of an airline pilot. I have been teaching online for the past 3 years and have even traveled to meet my students. I have loved teaching since middle school and would love to help your child find a love for math & reading.

Theodore Korolyshun

I was born and raised in Connecticut in a small city called Derby, before attending the University of Notre Dame and moving to Chicago for two years after graduation. It was here where I began teaching, and especially enjoyed helping students (and some teachers!) with math & reading.

Have questions?

  • Can you tell me more about the math tutors?

Our math tutors are certified educators with years of teaching experience. Each of them has been hand-picked for their innovative teaching styles, the ability to tailor their lessons according to different learning needs, and their main superpower - making math fun.

  • Will the tutor also help my child with their school homework?

The classes will be conducted on the specific topics independently of the progress in school. Math tutor will therefore not be able to assist your child with their homework.

  • Do I need to attend the classes with my child?

Our tutors are capable of keeping the children engaged and learning on their own. Most parents attend just the first class and prefer to let their child learn independently for the rest of the course.

  • Is there anything my child needs for this class?

Yes, you will need a computer or tablet with a webcam, mic, and speakers to attend the classes. Also, remember to keep a whiteboard and marker (or blank sheets and pen) handy for practice during the class.

  • Are these classes safe for my child?

Your child's safety and privacy is our primary concern. We do not collect any personal information and all our tutors go through a rigorous background verification process. Our classes are completely safe for your child.

  • How long is each class?

Each class is around 45-minutes long. Sometimes if the tutor needs more time to wrap up what they’re teaching, it can take a few minutes longer.

  • When will my card get charged?

The first class of your course is free. We will charge your card 24 hours after the first class. If you cancel before this, no money will be deducted from your account. If you wish to stop the course at any point, you will get charged only for the number of classes attended and we will refund the remaining amount.

  • How can I cancel the class?

You can go ahead and cancel your course by visiting - My Account > Billing > Subscriptions

  • What if the tutor is unable to complete the course within the set number of classes?

The course topics are designed to fit within the number of classes mentioned for every course. If due to an unforeseen event classes need to be extended beyond the original schedule, the tutor will conduct the remaining classes free of charge. Parents will be informed through email about such events.

  • How do I schedule a class with a math tutor?

It’s quite simple. Select the course you like and enroll your child. SplashLearn will automatically match you with a tutor who is teaching that course.

  • Can I reschedule a class?

Yes, you can reschedule classes or the complete course simply by visiting your account section or emailing us on tutor-feedback@splashlearn.com

  • Can I choose a math tutor?

No, you will be automatically matched with the best tutor for the course you’ve chosen.
