This course progresses to teach decimals on number lines and students get various opportunities to identify and mark decimals on a number line. Students are then introduced to the place value charts for decimals highlighting its similarities with the whole number base ten system.
The course has one class fully dedicated to comparing decimals in which students are given ample opportunities with models and benchmarks to develop proficiency with comparing and ordering decimals. This course is perfect for students who are new to the concept of decimals. This course is also suitable for those who just need a refresher in decimals.
The first class of this course introduces expands on the concept of decimal fractions to introduce decimals. The class provides ample opportunities to the students to relate fractions and decimals and understand how a number can be represented.
In this class, students identify and mark decimals on the number line using the relationship between fractions and decimals. Students begin by marking fractions with denominator 10 on the number and then mark the corresponding decimals on the same number
This class is designed to highlight decimals as an extension of the whole number base ten system. The class extends the place value charts for whole numbers to decimals, which enables students to identify the "tenths" and "hundredths" in a decimal number.
In this class, students will learn to compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Students work with base-ten models, decimal grids, and number lines to compare two decimals.
