About the course

This course is designed to help students gain fluency with fraction operations and focuses on fraction addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

The course begins with a recall of addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators and then move to addition & subtraction with unlike denominators. The students will also learn to multiply fractions including mixed numbers, both with and without models in this course.

Higher concepts like multiplication of fractions as scaling and solving real-world problems involving multiplication of fractions also form part of this course. This course is perfect for those who want to build a strong foundation of fractions and also for those who want to master these concepts.

Lessons in the Course

  • 1

Addition and Subtraction of Fractions with Like Denominators (2 Classes)

    • This lesson recalls an important concept of addition and subtraction of fractions including mixed numbers with like denominators both with and without the help of visual models.

  • 2

Addition and Subtraction of Fractions with Unlike Denominators (1 Class)

    • "This lesson takes forward the students' understanding of addition and subtraction of like fractions to now addition and subtraction of unlike fractions both with and without the help of visual models.

  • 3

Addition and Subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers with Unlike Denominators (2 Classes)

    • This lesson includes addition and subtraction of mixed numbers with unlike denominators both with and without the help of visual models. For this students will take help of their previous understanding of converting mixed numbers to fractions.

  • 4

Estimation of Sum and Difference of Two Fractions with Unlike Denominators (1 Class)

    • This lesson uses benchmark fractions and fraction number sense to mentally estimate the sum and difference of two fractions with unlike denominators.

  • 5

Multiplying whole number by a fraction (1 Class)

    • This lesson helps the students extend their previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a whole number by a fraction. Using this knowledge, students learn to find fraction of a set using visual models and multiplication.

  • 6

Multiplying Fraction by a Fraction (1 Class)

    • This lesson goes deeper into multiplication of fractions. Students now understand how to multiply two fractions, both with and without area models.

  • 7

    Multiplying Mixed Numbers (1 Class)

    • This lesson helps the students to recall their previous knowledge of converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and use it to help them multiply a fraction by a mixed number or a mixed number by a mixed number.

  • 8

Word Problems on Fraction Multiplication (1 Class)

    • This lesson is all about connecting the understanding of multiplication of fractions to real world applications. Students will solve a variety of mathematically rich word problems involving multiplication of fractions.

  • 9

Understanding Multiplication of Fractions as Scaling (1 Class)

    • This lesson helps the students to interpret multiplication as scaling by comparing the size of a product to the size of one factor on the basis of the size of the other factor, without performing the indicated multiplication.

  • 10

Compare and Estimate Product of Fractions by Reasoning (1 Class)

Parents love our courses

Passed this along to several friends

Father of a fourth grader

My son really enjoyed it and he usually hates math. Ted, the instructor was great. My son is looking forward to their next session on Friday and we signed him up for a session on Fractions as well. I've also passed this along to several friends who are interested. Much appreciated especially now. This is a great resource/service.

Teacher helps her understand concepts

Mother of a third grader

Thank you for emailing. So far, it has worked out well for us and our daughter. She says she really likes her teacher, despite the concepts being brand new to her. She feels challenged by some of the work, but I think that is the point and the teacher helps her understand the concepts.

Super patient teachers

Mother of a second grader

Kendra was wonderful. She was super patient with my son and he just took his milestone test on fractions at school and said "it was SO easy!" Kendra really helped get him up-to-speed on fractions.

Helping my son stay focused

Mother of a 3rd Grader

Thank you so much. My son has ADHD so keeping focus can be challenging for him. We really appreciate your support. I feel like he is really making strides.

Difficulty level was spot on

Parent of a 5th Grader

My daughter enjoyed the class. The level of difficulty was spot on. No complaints!

Meet the Teachers

Theodore Korolyshun

I was born and raised in Connecticut in a small city called Derby, before attending the University of Notre Dame and moving to Chicago for two years after graduation. It was here where I began teaching, and especially enjoyed helping students (and some teachers!) with math & reading.

Kaia Buhl

I'm an energetic teacher. I enjoy seeing the "I got it" moment of every student through their personal achievements. I adapt to different learning styles and have learned to quickly come up with a new example so that the student is able to understand the concept being learned at the moment.

Have questions?

  • Can you tell me more about the math tutors?

Our math tutors are certified educators with years of teaching experience. Each of them has been hand-picked for their innovative teaching styles, the ability to tailor their lessons according to different learning needs, and their main superpower - making math fun.

  • Will the tutor also help my child with their school homework?

The classes will be conducted on the specific topics independently of the progress in school. Math tutor will therefore not be able to assist your child with their homework.

  • Do I need to attend the classes with my child?

Our tutors are capable of keeping the children engaged and learning on their own. Most parents attend just the first class and prefer to let their child learn independently for the rest of the course.

  • Is there anything my child needs for this class?

Yes, you will need a computer or tablet with a webcam, mic, and speakers to attend the classes. Also, remember to keep a whiteboard and marker (or blank sheets and pen) handy for practice during the class.

  • Are these classes safe for my child?

Your child's safety and privacy is our primary concern. We do not collect any personal information and all our tutors go through a rigorous background verification process. Our classes are completely safe for your child.

  • How long is each class?

Each class is around 45-minutes long. Sometimes if the tutor needs more time to wrap up what they’re teaching, it can take a few minutes longer.

  • When will my card get charged?

The first class of your course is free. We will charge your card 24 hours after the first class. If you cancel before this, no money will be deducted from your account. If you wish to stop the course at any point, you will get charged only for the number of classes attended and we will refund the remaining amount.

  • How can I cancel the class?

You can go ahead and cancel your course by visiting - My Account > Billing > Subscriptions

  • What if the tutor is unable to complete the course within the set number of classes?

The course topics are designed to fit within the number of classes mentioned for every course. If due to an unforeseen event classes need to be extended beyond the original schedule, the tutor will conduct the remaining classes free of charge. Parents will be informed through email about such events.

  • How do I schedule a class with a math tutor?

It’s quite simple. Select the course you like and enroll your child. SplashLearn will automatically match you with a tutor who is teaching that course.
